Seemingly ripped from today’s headlines of revolution: In the name of freedom and human rights, Hungary, a nation of 10 million stands up to the communist terror of the Soviet Union, a nation of 200 million. For 13 violent days in October of 1956, the Hungarian Revolution eventually leads to the decline of communism around the world, culminating with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
From the filmmakers who brought you Panic Nation comes a documentary seen by scores of people at 18 film festivals around the world, winner of eight awards, including inclusion to the 2009 Oscar race for Best Documentary. Beautifully shot by renowned cinematographer László Kovács; the film includes archive footage smuggled out of Hungary that has not been seen in more than 40 years, along with interviews of Freedom Fighters, Soviet soldiers, historians, politicians and witnesses who recount the heroic and harrowing events that took place on the streets of Budapest.
Film critics have called Torn from the Flag:
“The most comprehensive chronicle of the Hungarian uprising yet caught on film.” Stephen Farber of the Hollywood Reporter.
“The crowning achievement of his (László Kovács) 50 years behind the camera.” Brian O’Hare – MovieMaker Magazine.
“Riveting and impassioned,” Richard Propes.

Hungarian artist and painter Tünde Darvay displayed artwork at the event. Born in Transylvania of Hungarian decent, she was educated at The University of Fine Arts in Cluj, earning a BFA degree. From as early as her high-school years, she participated regularly in national and international exhibitions. Moving to Oklahoma in March 2004, she became permanent resident in April 2007. Her works are visual representations of the fusion between Transylvanian and American culture.
Tom Kovach a Norman City Council member and first generation Hungarian immigrant spoke at the event.
